Nuss Procedure. The Nuss procedure is a minimally-invasive procedure, invented by Dr. Donald Nuss for treating pectus excavatum. He developed it at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, in Norfolk, Virginia. The operation typically takes approximately two hours The Nuss, or MIRPE, procedure is carried out as a minimally invasive or keyhole operation to treat pectus excavatum. Fundamentally, it involves the placement of an internal 'brace or bar' to lift the sternum without removing cartilage or cutting the breastbone The Nuss procedure. The operation takes 30 - 60 minutes. During the operation two to three (maybe more) 5 cm incisions is made. A camera is inserted through one of the wholes allowing the surgeon to monitor the procedure and avoid injury to the heart during insertion It was originally described by Donald Nuss and this is why it is also called the Nuss technique or pectus bar procedure. Nuss performed the first minimally invasive operation for the correction of pectus excavatum in the 1980s, but it was not until 1997 that this innovative technique was introduced to the American Pediatric Surgical Association

The Nuss Procedure. The Nuss Procedure is the most commonly performed operation for correcting pectus excavatum. Invented and introduced by Dr. Donald Nuss in 1998 after a decade of doing his own research, the Nuss procedure is considered minimally-invasive because only a few small incisions are needed Both traditional open surgery (Ravitch repair) and minimally invasive techniques (Nuss repair) are used to correct pectus excavatum. Both techniques generally improve chest appearance. They also improve the structure of the ribs and sternum, as well as the function of the heart and lung Before cryoablation-assisted Nuss procedures, the month or more needed for recovery meant that school-age patients had to undergo surgery during summer to avoid missing classes. Now, the reduced length of hospital stay and recovery time give patients greater flexibility in scheduling their PE procedure, which can often be done during winter or spring breaks Donald Nuss of Pectus Clinic invented a surgery to rehabilitate pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. While two different conditions, these skeletal deformities can cause slight to severe medical issues, as well as self-esteem problems for cosmetic reasons .Pectus carinatum involves the sternum and ribs pushing outward so that the chest wall is chronically extended, constricting heart and.

The Nuss and modified Ravitch approaches attempt to correct the chest wall deformity by forcing the sternum forward in 1-step and holding it in place using a metal strut. The initial operation requires extensive manipulation under general anesthesia and results in post-operative pain, requiring hospitalization and regional anesthesia Le pectus excavatum correspond à ce que l'on appelle aussi un « thorax en entonnoir » ou une « poitrine creuse ».
